English Port

English Port, known locally as İngiliz Limanı, is the largest bay inside the Gulf of Gökova, tucked between headlands well to the north of Marmaris, in a stretch of coast better known today for its sailing than for any permanent settlement. Its name comes from the Second World War, when British naval vessels used the well-hidden inlet as a covert base for operations against German shipping in the eastern Mediterranean during 1944 and 1945.

The bay's floor is a mix of sand and mud, reaching seven or eight metres deep near the entrance and shelving upward toward reed beds at its northern end, with pine forest covering the surrounding slopes. There is no pier, restaurant or village on shore, which keeps the anchorage quiet even in the busiest summer weeks, and the water stays noticeably calmer here than in more exposed parts of the gulf.

On longer routes through the Gulf of Gökova, many charter guests anchor here for the afternoon, usually as part of an itinerary that also takes in Bodrum rather than a short trip out of Marmaris.
