Demre's ancient name was Myra, home of the historical Saint Nicholas, and the town keeps that connection alive each winter with the Saint Nicholas Symposium, held annually around December 4-6 to mark Saint Nicholas Day. Scholars, clergy and visitors gather at the fourth-century Church of Saint Nicholas for talks, services and commemorations, giving Demre a distinct off-season event outside the sailing calendar. December also falls squarely in the district's wettest stretch, so while the symposium draws a small but steady stream of visitors, most gulet operators and seasonal businesses along the coast are closed until the following spring, and the town returns to a quiet, working rhythm centred on its greenhouse agriculture until the weather warms again.
