Bodrum Antique Theater

The Antique Theatre of Bodrum is among the oldest structures still standing in the town, cut into the hillside above the harbor and dating back to the 4th century BC, during the reign of the Carian ruler Mausolus. Its horseshoe-shaped cavea, roughly 86 meters wide, once held an audience the Romans later enlarged to around 13,000 spectators after renovations carried out in the 2nd century AD, when the venue was also adapted to host gladiator contests in the Roman fashion.

Centuries of earthquakes, along with the later reuse of its cut stone in other buildings, eventually reduced the theatre to a ruin. A restoration completed in the early 2000s brought it back into use, and it now seats roughly 3,100 people for concerts, ballet performances, and other open-air events staged against the backdrop of Bodrum Castle and the Aegean Sea below.

Visitors who climb up to the theatre in the late afternoon are usually rewarded with sweeping views over the bay and the marina beneath it, a good reason to pair the visit with a walk down to the harbor, where many go on to spend the rest of their trip chartering a gulet from Bodrum.
