Spartochori

Spartochori is one of three villages on Meganisi, a small island just off the eastern coast of Lefkada in the Ionian Sea — not, as is sometimes assumed, a village on Lefkada itself. Perched on a hillside above Spilia Bay, it looks out toward the privately owned island of Skorpios nearby. Meganisi's entire municipality, made up of Spartochori together with the villages of Vathy and Katomeri, counted 926 residents at the 2021 census, down from 1,149 in 1981, a reflection of the slow depopulation common to many small Greek islands.

The settlement grew up around Spilia Bay, a natural harbour that has long sheltered local fishing boats alongside visiting yachts and flotillas. A short walk up from the quay leads to the village itself, a cluster of whitewashed and stone houses, tavernas and small shops strung along two main lanes. Nearby Agios Nikolaos Bay offers further sheltered anchorage for boats exploring the island's coastline.

Because Meganisi lies within easy reach of Lefkada's marinas and the well-known Nydri anchorages, it features on many Ionian sailing routes, and many gulet cruises in Greece call in here to break up a passage between Lefkada and the mainland coast.
