Emporio

Emporio, also known locally as Nimborios, is an inland village on the Greek island of Santorini, set at the foot of the Profitis Ilias mountain roughly 12 kilometers from the capital, Fira. Unlike the clifftop settlements of Oia and Fira, Emporio sits away from the caldera, which has helped it keep a quieter, more traditional character with narrow lanes and whitewashed houses. According to the 2021 Greek census, the wider community of Emporio, which also includes Perissa, Agios Georgios and Exomytis, counted 3,704 permanent residents.

The village's most notable landmark is Goulas Castle, a fortification built during the medieval period when Santorini's inhabitants needed protection from pirate raids common across the Aegean. Nearby, the church of Saint Nicholas Marmaritis stands among the settlement's older religious buildings. Administratively, Emporio belongs to the municipal unit of Thira, within Greece's South Aegean region.

Because Emporio has no coastline of its own, visitors arriving by sea normally anchor near Perissa or Vlychada before continuing inland by road, making it a popular stop for gulet charter guests exploring Greece who want to pair beach time with a look at Santorini's quieter side.
