Patitiri

Patitiri is the port town and capital of Alonnisos, the least developed of the main Sporades islands in the northern Aegean. Its name comes from the Greek word for "wine press," a nod to the island's long tradition of viticulture. The town itself is relatively young: the island's original capital, Chora, was badly damaged by a series of earthquakes that struck the region in March 1965, and the frightened population resettled a few kilometres away at the harbour, building the new town of Patitiri on the hillside above the bay. It quickly grew into the island's largest settlement, and the 2021 census recorded 1,387 residents, down from a peak of over 1,800 in the early 1990s.

Whitewashed houses climb the slopes around the small harbour, which sits amid marble rock formations and is backed by dense pine forest. As the main gateway to Alonnisos and the wider National Marine Park of Alonnisos and the Northern Sporades, Patitiri's harbour sees a steady flow of yachts and small ferries throughout the summer, and its sheltered waters and nearby pebble beaches make it a popular stop for gulet charter guests exploring Greece before heading out to the marine park's quieter anchorages.
