Mylopotas Beach

Mylopotas is the best-known beach on Ios, a small Cycladic island that lies roughly halfway between Naxos and Santorini and covers just 109 square kilometers. The island's population stood at 2,299 in the 2021 census, down from around 3,500 residents in the mid-20th century, even as its beaches drew growing numbers of visitors. Mylopotas sits on the southern coast, a short walk down from Chora, the whitewashed hilltop village that serves as the island's capital, and stretches for roughly 1.5 kilometers of soft sand backed by cafés and tavernas.

Since the 1970s, the beach has developed into one of the Cyclades' best-known youth destinations, evolving into the kind of organized package-tourism resort comparable to Platys Gialos or Paradise Beach on Mykonos, complete with beach bars, water-sports operators, and a lively bar scene. Ios also carries a long-standing literary legend: ancient coins from the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC depict Homer, reflecting the island's claim to be the poet's final resting place.
