Syros Island

Syros is the administrative capital of the Cyclades and one of the more densely populated islands in the group, with 21,124 residents recorded in the 2021 census across an area of about 83.6 square kilometres. Its main town, Ermoupoli — seat of the regional government for the entire South Aegean — was founded in the 1820s by refugees fleeing the Greek War of Independence and grew into one of the Mediterranean's busiest ports during the 19th century.

For sailors, Syros offers more variety than its size suggests: sheltered bays such as Galissas and Finikas provide reliable protection from the Meltemi winds that sweep the Aegean in summer, while more exposed anchorages like Delfino and Varis reward those willing to time a visit around the weather. The island's pebbly beaches and rocky seabeds call for a little more caution than the soft sand of some neighbouring islands, but the payoff is a genuinely lived-in Cycladic island rather than a purely touristic one — one reason many charter guests exploring Greece anchor here for the afternoon before continuing their route.
