Platis Gialos (Sifnos Island)

Platis Gialos is a resort village on the southern coast of Sifnos, named for the long, wide sweep of beach along its waterfront — platis gialos translates roughly as "wide shore." It lies about 8 kilometres from Apollonia, the island's inland capital, and some 14 kilometres from the main port of Kamares, and like much of Sifnos it is a genuinely seasonal place, filling with visitors, tavernas, and small hotels in summer and quieting considerably the rest of the year.

The beach has repeatedly earned Blue Flag status from the Foundation for Environmental Education, a recognition tied to water quality and safety standards, and its shallow, gently sloping shoreline and small-boat marina make it a comfortable stop for swimmers and sailors alike. A short walk above the village leads to the hilltop chapel of Panagia tou Vounou, with views back over the bay, while the wider coastline of Sifnos — dotted with quieter coves and fishing hamlets — is best reached during a gulet cruise along the Greece coast that uses Platis Gialos as a convenient overnight anchorage.
