Sutomiscica

Sutomišćica is a small village on the eastern coast of the island of Ugljan, about three kilometres from Preko, set inside a bay of the same name. According to the 2021 census it had 380 residents, making it one of the smaller settlements on the island.

The village's name comes from its oldest church, dedicated to St Euphemia, first mentioned in written records at the beginning of the fourteenth century; a second church, dedicated to St Gregory, dates back to the twelfth century. The most striking building, however, is the Baroque villa Lantana, built in 1686 as a summer house for a Zadar noble family and later passed to the Blasić family. Under Venetian rule the villa was reportedly used for the ceremony that handed over the authority of the Doge of Venice over Dalmatia and Albania, a practice that ended with the fall of the Venetian Republic in 1797.

Today the village's economy still rests on olive growing — local groves produce the Puljka and Oštrica varieties — alongside fishing and tourism. A modern marina in the sheltered bay gives the village a working harbour, and many gulet cruises in Croatia call in here, taking advantage of the protected anchorage a short hop from Zadar.
