Sukosan

Sukošan is a coastal municipality in Zadar County, on the mainland between the city of Zadar and Biograd na Moru, about seven kilometres south of Zadar itself. The municipality had 4,665 residents at the 2021 census, spread across four settlements — Sukošan itself (2,980), Debeljak (895), Gorica (612) and Glavica (178).

The settlement grew up on a small cape in the bay of Zlatna uvala during medieval times. Its parish church, dedicated to St Kasijan, likely dates to the eleventh century and was renovated in the seventeenth. On an islet in the bay stand the ruins of a fifteenth-century summer villa built for the archbishops of Zadar, including Archbishop Matheo Valaresso, while further along the coast the ruins of a fortress on Cape Bribirčina recall the medieval counts of Bribir.

Sukošan's modern reputation rests largely on the sea: Marina Dalmacija (D-Marin Dalmacija), in a naturally sheltered bay just south of the village, is the largest marina on the Croatian coast, with berths for around 1,200 boats up to 70 metres in length and a draft of up to 7 metres, plus dry-dock storage for some 300 more. It lies only five kilometres from Zadar Airport. Farming, viticulture, olive growing and fruit growing remain part of the local economy alongside tourism, and many gulet cruises in Croatia call in here to use the marina's facilities or simply to break a passage along the North Dalmatian coast.
