Sea Organ

The Sea Organ (Morske orgulje) was designed by architect Nikola Bašić and opened on 15 April 2005 on Zadar's waterfront, at the point where the city's new ferry and cruise terminal was being built. Rather than a single instrument, it is a set of 35 pipes built into a flight of steps spanning about 70 metres of coastline, divided into seven sections and tuned to five tones capable of producing seven chords.

As waves rise and fall against the shore, they push air through channels beneath the steps and up through the pipes, producing a constantly shifting, organ-like drone with no two performances ever quite the same. The installation won the European Prize for Urban Public Space in 2006.

A short walk away, Bašić later added the Greeting to the Sun (Pozdrav Suncu): a 22-metre circle set into the pavement, made from 300 multi-layered glass plates with photovoltaic cells underneath. The plates absorb sunlight during the day and power a light show along the waterfront after dark.

Together the two installations make Zadar's harbourfront a popular stop for gulet charter guests exploring Croatia.
