Zdrelac

Ždrelac is a small village on the island of Pašman, in Zadar County — not, as its listing might suggest, anywhere near Split. According to the 2021 census it has 397 inhabitants. The village sits right beside the narrow strait, Ždrilo, that separates Pašman from the neighbouring island of Ugljan, and takes its name from that passage.

Ždrelac is best known for the bridge that carries the D110 road across the strait to Ugljan. Built in 1972 and widened in a 2009 reconstruction, the bridge has a clearance of only 16.5 metres at high tide, and the current running through the strait can reach four knots. Among sailors it has earned a grim nickname, the "mast killer," because a handful of yachts misjudge the clearance and strike it every year. The village also has a parish church, dedicated to St. Luke, that local tourist authorities date to the 13th century.

Zdrelac lies more than 100 kilometres north of Split by sea, in the Zadar archipelago rather than the Split area, so it isn't a stop on a short local charter. It does occasionally feature on longer, multi-day itineraries that start in Split and head north toward the Kornati islands, and it's on that kind of extended route — rather than a day sail — that it might be worth a visit if you're chartering a gulet from Split.
