Red Rocks

Red Rocks — known locally as Crvene stijene — has nothing to do with Split. It is a stretch of rust-red limestone cliff on the south coast of Hvar Island, roughly 8 km east of Hvar Town, between Hvar Town and the village of Sveta Nedjelja, close to the secluded pebble cove of Pišćena.

The rock's colour comes from iron oxide in the stone, and the cliffs drop almost vertically into the sea, creating one of the more distinctive underwater landscapes on this side of the island. There is no road access; the site is reached exclusively by boat, usually as a stop on tour or charter routes out of Hvar Town, and is used mainly for swimming, snorkelling and cliff-jumping into the deep water beneath the rock face.

Because it lies within day-trip range of the wider central Dalmatian charter grounds, it's still worth a visit if you're chartering a gulet from Split that includes Hvar on its route, even though the rocks themselves belong to Hvar, not Split.
