Green Cave

The Green Cave (Zelena špilja) is a sea cave on the south-western side of Ravnik, a tiny uninhabited islet just off the southern coast of Vis, directly across the water from the village of Rukavac. It's often mentioned alongside the better-known Blue Cave near Biševo, though the two sit on entirely different islands.

The cave has two large entrances and a domed ceiling with an opening at its centre; sunlight streaming through this opening illuminates the seabed and, combined with algae growing on the cave walls, gives the water inside its distinctive emerald-green colour. Unlike the Blue Cave, swimming inside the Green Cave is allowed, and the entrances are large enough for small boats and kayaks to pass through; the water inside is roughly 3 to 5 meters deep.

The cave has been protected as a geomorphological monument of nature since 1967, and it now also falls within the Vis Archipelago UNESCO Global Geopark, recognized by UNESCO in 2019 as only the second geopark of its kind in Croatia.

June to September, when calmer seas make entry easier, is the best time to visit. The Green Cave is one of the anchorages you'll visit on a private gulet charter from Split that also takes in Vis and its surrounding islets.
