Volosko Village

Volosko is a small fishing village on the Adriatic coast, part of the wider Opatija Riviera in Kvarner. Before Opatija itself grew into a fashionable resort, Volosko was the more important settlement of the two: it served as the seat of the local district, its main trading port and administrative centre.

Its best-known claim to fame is scientific rather than touristic: Volosko is the birthplace of Andrija Mohorovičić, born here in 1857. Mohorovičić went on to identify the boundary separating the Earth's crust from the mantle — a discovery now known worldwide as the Mohorovičić discontinuity, or Moho for short. A monument in the old part of the village, near the house where he was born at the start of the Lungomare coastal promenade, commemorates him.

Volosko has kept its narrow stone lanes and small-harbour character even as neighbouring Opatija built up around large hotels, and today the village is known chiefly for its concentration of well-regarded seafood restaurants — one reason many gulet cruises in Croatia call in here.
