Porer Lighthouse

The Porer Lighthouse stands on a small, uninhabited islet about 2.5 kilometres southwest of Cape Kamenjak, the southernmost point of the Istrian peninsula, near the village of Premantura. Built in 1833, it is a 31-metre stone tower rising from a single-storey keeper's house, making it the tallest lighthouse in Istria. The lighthouse is automated and linked to a remote monitoring system, but it still has a resident keeper family, who look after two apartments that can be rented for an overnight stay on the islet — with no shops, no crowds, and no WiFi.

The surrounding waters fall within the protected area of Cape Kamenjak, known among other things for the fossilised dinosaur footprints discovered nearby in 1975 by researchers Matjaž Gogala and Rajko Pavlovec — tracks left some 65 to 70 million years ago during the Cretaceous period. For boats sailing this stretch of the Adriatic, the lighthouse and its rocky islet are a classic stop on a Croatia blue cruise itinerary, usually reached by a short tender ride from Premantura.
