The Museum (Juraj Dobrovic Gallery)

The building known locally as "The Museum" is the Juraj Dobrović Gallery, in Jelsa on Hvar island — a separate town from Hvar Town. It's housed in the Dobrović family home, a traditional Dalmatian house that sculptor Juraj Dobrović, born in Jelsa in 1928 into a prominent merchant family, donated to his hometown in 2010 along with its original furniture and more than 200 objects of cultural and historical value.

Alongside the family collection, Dobrović gave the town 60 of his own works — sculptures, drawings, and reliefs — which now form the core of the museum's exhibits. The ground floor holds the "Kravata" gallery, used mainly for temporary shows by contemporary artists, so part of the collection changes even though the permanent rooms upstairs stay the same.

It's a small, low-key stop, but a genuine one — run by the town rather than built for tourists — and easy to combine with a day of exploring Croatia's coast by boat if you're already anchored near Jelsa.
