Dubrovnik Game of Thrones

Dubrovnik's walled Old Town became King's Landing in HBO's Game of Thrones, and a good number of the show's specific scenes were shot at spots you can still walk to today. The Pile Gate and the harbor just outside it stood in for King's Landing's main entrance and the Blackwater Bay shots, while Fort Lovrijenac — the freestanding fortress on its own cliff west of the walls — played the exterior of the Red Keep, including the tourney held for Joffrey's name day.

Two of the most recognizable scenes were filmed on the Jesuit Staircase, the Baroque steps linking Gundulić Square to St. Ignatius Church: Cersei's Walk of Shame and the Great Sept of Baelor steps were both shot here. A short drive north, the Trsteno Arboretum — one of the oldest botanical gardens on the Adriatic — provided the greenery for King's Landing's royal gardens, seen in scenes between Sansa and Margaery. On the walls themselves, Minčeta Tower served as the exterior of the House of the Undying, and Gradac Park was used for the Purple Wedding.

Qarth's interior scenes, including Daenerys's reception by the Thirteen, were actually filmed a short boat ride away on Lokrum Island, with the city's exterior built digitally on top of the medieval walls of Trogir, further up the coast — a reminder that not everything associated with the show's "Dubrovnik" locations sits inside the walls themselves.

These days, many visitors combine a day of sightseeing with a private gulet charter from Dubrovnik, taking in Lokrum and the surrounding coastline much like the show's own crews once did.
